What is Seaweed?

Seaweeds, as its name suggests is a loose colloquial term encompassing macroscopic, multicellular, benthic marine algae. The term includes some members of the red, brown and green algae.

Seaweeds are extensively used as food by coastal people around the world. They are either eaten raw, cooked or processed. Seaweeds are also being used as medicine and other medical application.

SIAP Website is dedicated for promoting the farming and production of red seaweeds. Red seaweeds are extensively farmed and produced in the Philippines. Red seaweeds are the raw materials to produces Carrageenan, a gelly substance used as food additive or ingredient.

  SIAP as it is commonly known, is a non-stock corporation registered in the Securities and Exchange Commision (SEC) of the Republic of the Philippines with registration number: CE-00463 dated September 19, 1985.
  
  Since its creation in 1985, SIAP has played a major role in the continual development and improvement of the Seaweed Industry in the Philippines.
  
  As of today, SIAP members have grown from a few Carrageenan Processors to more than 100,000 which includes Raw Seaweed Exporters, Seaweed Traders and Seaweed Farmers and their families.
HISTORY

Seaweeds is one important aquaculture commodities in the Philippines. More than 1500 species of seaweeds are found in the country but only 500 have been recorded as edible. The major commercial species are: Eucheuma, Kappaphycus, Gracilaria and Caulerpa. Commonly cultured seaweeds are Eucheuma Spinosum and Kappaphycus Alvarezi (Euchema Cottonii).

        During the mid-1960's, the supply of Euchema Seaweeds (commonly known as "GUSO") grown wild and harvested abundantly in the Sulu Archipelago and Eastern Visayas, became scarce. The decline in seaweed supply was not only the result of limited areas thriving with seaweeds but also the unsystematic and uncontrolled harvesting procedure in order to satisfy the demand of international processing plants. Commercial propagation of seaweeds began in 1966 as a result of the continuing search for new material that would satisfy a growing market.

        The introduction and successful application of culture techniques for seaweeds growing was based in the historic findings of three scientists, namely: Dr. Maxwell S. Doty, Mr. Vicente Alvarez of the Philippine Fisheries Commission (now Bureau of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources - BFAR) and Dr. Gavino Trono, Jr. of the University if the Philippines. By 1969, the first formal studies on Eucheuma done in Cebu City and Zamboanga City were the basis for the establishment of a large Eucheuma plantation in Tapaan Island, Siasi, Jolo.

        Since then, seaweed farming are done abundantly in the coastal areas of Jolo, Tawi-tawi, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Palawan, Bohol and other areas of the Visayas and Mindanao.
